Refer a patient

A documented specialist opinion and a clear recommendation before you operate. Call to discuss a case without naming the patient.

Why refer

The right operation for the wrong reason rarely helps

Patient safety

BDD is often missed

People with body dysmorphic disorder rarely raise it themselves, and surgery seldom relieves their symptoms. Screening finds it early.

Professional standards

Documented decisions

A specialist report supports GMC guidance on cosmetic interventions and gives a clear record of why a decision was made.

Better outcomes

Right patient, right time

Where surgery should wait, the report sets out what needs to happen first, so the door stays open for the future.

When to refer

Signs it may be time for a specialist opinion

None of these means a patient cannot have treatment. They are reasons to take a closer look first.

  • A preoccupation with a flaw that seems minor, or is not visible to you
  • Several previous procedures, or ongoing dissatisfaction with results
  • Expectations that the procedure will change things it is unlikely to change
  • Marked distress, avoidance or time spent checking or concealing appearance
  • A disclosed psychiatric history, or current mental health treatment
  • Any doubt about the patient’s capacity to consent

What the report includes

A report your team can act on.

Written for clinicians, in plain clinical language, with a recommendation you can put straight into the patient’s record.

  • Diagnosis and severity. DSM-5 criteria where applicable and validated screening scores, clearly reported.
  • A clear recommendation. Proceed, defer or contraindicated, with the reasons behind it.
  • Conditions before proceeding. What should happen first, if surgery should wait.
  • Capacity statement. Included when you request it.
